God is day and night

"God is day and night, bondage and freedom, prison cell and the whole world." (p. 59)

  1. This makes sense, this is harmonious with the words of Hubbard about Plowhandle Point.

    1. I'm still very new to Harlan Hubbard, having recently seen a video about him ("Wonder") and been recently given this book of woodcuts. There are other books about him and that he wrote himself which I should probably look into before I comment much about him. But at first glance, he seems a bit like a Lax to me. Odd. Innately gifted with a way of being that is out of step, and totally comfortable with that oddness. Willing to follow it wherever, and at whatever price. Both Lax and HHubbard were artists who did not promote themselves or their art.

  2. W. Berry's book, Harlan Hubbard: Life and Work, is good; I'm going to reread it after 20 years or so. I don't recall anywhere in this book that Hubbard was into self promotion. Hubbard spoke of a "guiding force", and Berry wrote that "his perceptions were often of an order that might properly be described as mystical". Yes, Hubbard has qualities that Lax had, although Hubbard shared his life with a woman and was quite involved with the world physically, strong and able to build things. I'm thankful that we have them both to nourish us.

    1. I remember Lax saying somewhere that he couldn't become a hermit because he couldn't chop wood! :-)
